Safeguarding Our Girls: Sexual Abuse in the Family 1:30 p.m.

Many girls are living with sexual abuse.  Parents need to know the warning signs
and how to protect their children.  Communication, trust and respect are key in
ending addressing sexual violence.

What should you do when you learn about sexual abuse? If it is your  child?
Your partner?  A well known client or friend?  Who do you contact?  What is the
right decision?

This hour long workshop starts the discussion for parents and caregivers.
The Darkest Secrets: Professional Approaches to Abuse 3p.m.

As professionals, our job is to provide help and justice for victims of crime.
This can be difficult because many victims choose not to seek help or work with
law enforcement.
Victims can be routinely re-victimized by professionals.  From hospital exams to
sworn statements, victims are forced to relive the abuse and reveal intimate
details of their life.  The anticipated outcome is justice, the side effect, a
secondary trauma.
Professionals need to establish a rapport so victims are comfortable talking to
them.
Communication, trust and respect are key. We must also know what questions
to ask and how to handle the information given.
This one hour session will discuss ways to help victims with their darkest secrets.
